Radiating Romance

The Proposal(s)

In the midst of a week-long visit with Savannah’s family in Maui, she suggested a two-day excursion to the island of Kauai. Willing to gamble it all, the couple agreed to let Zac plan out the details while Savannah reveled in the uncertainty of the surprises (or chaos) awaiting her. That aura of uncertainty rose during the early morning flight to Lihue when any and all questions from Sav were met with suspiciously vague answers by Zac — yet the biggest question remained unspoken: Did Zac actually spend hours meticulously planning this trip? Or was this about to be another test of his belief that, with a positive attitude, things just work out?

As soon as tires touched the tarmac, our reticent trailblazers set off for an adventurous hike into the jungle. On which, a series of seemingly uninhibited route changes through a matrix of increasingly thin dirt paths led to several dead ends before delivering them at hidden pool near the heart of the island. Though confidence in Zac’s planning was quickly diminishing, the cool waters lapped at their feet as they paused to absorb the stillness of the private cove before racing back down the mountain.

A sentimental walk around Hanalei Bay Elementary brought a welcomed note of nostalgia to the otherwise uncharted events of their day. As the pacing of the journey began to slow, Zac and Sav made their way onto the nearby shoreline to watch the sunset over the sea. With a sense that the present moment embodied the core of both their day and their relationship— a relationship that leans into adventure with a posture of trust & joy— Zac dropped his knee into the sands of Hanalei Bay and invited Savannah to a lifetime together. She said, yes.

After rapidly exploring the wildlife refuge, visiting a jungle monastery and encouraging locals to exceed the speed limit; a timely pitstop at a gourmet bento box spot on the East Shore served to fill their stomachs ahead of Zac leading the way to a secluded spot on a beach featuring a few “No Entry” signs. A tranquil dip in the surf foreshadowed the uniquely serene hotel check-in process that followed and a cocktail on the balcony of the resort primed Savannah for a view that literally brought her to tears (not pictured).

As the sun began to dip low on the horizon, casting the sky in hues of pink and orange, the couple stumbled upon an extraordinary coincidence. Just across the way, on the edge of the island’s north shore, was Savannah’s old elementary school—so close to the beach where they had hoped to dine that it almost seemed planned.

Bright and early the next morning, the newly-engageds found a highly technical hike that was just barely (maybe) achievable before their departing flight. Persuaded by an impassioned pitch from Zac, Sav agreed to the challenge and accepted the reality that, whether they missed their flight or not, they were certain to be the muddiest and grimiest people in the airport.

After 2+ hours of climbing, they reached their destination and Zac suddenly realized that the present blend of spontaneity, beauty and seclusion made for the perfect proposal moment. So, unwilling to miss the opportunity, Zac borrowed Savannah’s ring, got down on his knee once again and wholeheartedly asked if she would do him the honor of being his bride.

Savannah said yes.. again.
